Hull #1

The original mast was damaged some years ago by the previous owners when they dropped it while carrying it to the lift from the mast tree to step the mast. The current mast is significantly sturdier, thicker, and I am not sure if the dimensions and/or boom placement have been changed. All lines are led inside this mast.

Was all stained and varnished mahogany (and when I purchased the boat in beautiful condition), but after many years of pointless varnishing only to watch it weather right off, I am in the process of replacing everything with teak. I do oil the teak, but have no intention of varnishing ever again. The teak will weather well. Boats are made to be sailed, not constantly finished like fine furniture. Mahogany trim outside = very bad idea!

Most amazing trip was a 50 mile crossing of Lake Erie under a full gale (40-50 kn sustained winds) with 20 ft seas encountered mid way across. Spent 8 hours fighting up into winds with waves breaking over bow of the boat. Cockpit fully flooded numerous times as large waves broke over the side and rolled leeward rail under the water. Flew only a genoa reefed down to storm jib size and often surfed at over 8 kns. I was harnessed in with a gallon of fresh water in the cockpit, all hatches secured. Never did have enough time to take a single drink of water. Safely tied up the boat back in home port, and fell asleep from exhaustion. Took on board no more that 10 gallons of water in bilge. Conditions were so bad that once underway I soon realized that my chances of surviving the day were quite limited. This Renegade took a tremendous beating and got me home in one piece - a truly great boat. I could go on and on with similar adventures...
